Halal Cart-Style White Sauce Recipe

Halal Cart-Style White Sauce Recipe

If you’ve ever travelled to New York City, you would know that street food is ubiquitous! The vendors that sell chicken/lamb over turmeric rice with a side salad is the ultimate cheap delight. Their Halal cart-style white sauce recipe always elevates the meal!

Now that we are in the throes of a pandemic, cooking at home is more of a necessity. The challenge is to successfully recreate our beloved take out favourites that still satiate us.

This halal cart-style white sauce recipe is the perfect compliment to my take on NYC street food inspired chicken & rice combo

The beauty of this tangy sauce lies in its ability to enhance a variety of dishes. I like to drizzle this over my tabbouleh from time to time and it always hits the spot!

A major component of this sauce is the garlic but it’s up to you if you want to use a fresh clove or garlic powder. Whenever I’m in a hurry, I usually opt for the powder instead. A garlic press is the best way to quickly mince the garlic clove without having to chop it up. However, if you don’t have one, I recommend using a fine grater.

Halal Cart-Style White Sauce Recipe

Lavanya Nair
A smooth, tangy sauce infused with garlic, parsley and black pepper
Prep Time 5 minutes
Course Side Dish
Cuisine Middle Eastern
Servings 2 people

Ingredients

  • ½ cup low fat greek yoghurt
  • ¾ cup mayonnaise
  • tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic *or 1 tsp of garlic powder
  • 1 tsp finely chopped fresh parsley *can be dried
  • *salt to taste
  • ½ tsp black pepper powder

Instructions

  • Combine the yoghurt and mayo in a bowl with a whisk and drizzle in the lemon juice
  • Using a garlic press, mince one garlic clove and add to the mixture. (You may also crush the clove in a pestle and mortar or grate it) If you are using garlic powder, add it in instead.
  • Mix once again and add the chopped parsely, salt and pepper to taste.
  • If the sauce is too thick, you can thin it out with a few teaspoons of plain water (or more lemon juice if you prefer) I would gradually add the water and stir in between to control the consistency.
  • Now the sauce is ready, drizzle over Halal-style chicken & rice or a kebab and enjoy!
