Easy Homemade Flatbread Recipe
Looking for a simple, quick, and delicious flatbread recipe with just a few pantry ingredients? This easy homemade flatbread recipe made with bread flour, salt, water, and olive oil is perfect for 4 people. These soft, warm flatbreads are perfect as a side dish, for wraps, or even as a base for pizzas.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups bread flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for cooking)
Instructions:
- Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of bread flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Stir to evenly distribute the salt throughout the flour.
- Add water and oil: Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and slowly add ¾ cup warm water and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Stir the ingredients together until the dough begins to form.
- Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.Using a Stand Mixer: If you have a stand mixer, attach the dough hook and combine the flour, salt, water, and olive oil in the mixing bowl. Start mixing on low speed until the ingredients come together, then increase the speed to medium. Let the mixer knead the dough for about 5 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. This is a great hands-off method if you prefer not to knead the dough manually.
- Let the dough rest: Cover the dough with a damp towel and let it rest for 15-20 minutes. This step helps the dough relax, making it easier to roll out.
- Divide and shape: After resting, divide the dough into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then use a rolling pin to flatten them into thin rounds, about ¼ inch thick.
- Cook the flatbreads: Heat a non-stick pan or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly brush the pan with olive oil and cook each flatbread for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown spots appear, and the bread puffs up slightly.
- Serve warm: Once cooked, transfer the flatbreads to a plate. Serve them warm with dips, as wraps, or alongside your favorite meal.
Tips:
- For extra flavor, add minced garlic or herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough.
- To make the flatbreads crispier, cook them a little longer in the pan.
- Store any leftover flatbreads in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
Why Use Bread Flour?
